Disability Insurance in Massachusetts and Boston – Are You Really Covered?

Being protected while at work is the most important thing. Don’t be fooled by the common misconception of disability insurance in Massachusetts and Boston. Do you have questions and concerns?

While long-term disability (LTD) benefits provided by your employee are valuable, there are some common misconceptions of what your disability benefit at work is:

• Group LTD policies typically replace 60% of your income, sometimes a bit more or less.  The only thing is, since it is an employer paid plan, the benefit is taxable.  Therefore the after tax amount of coverage is more like 45%-50% of one's income.  The important question to ask oneself is if you can maintain your current standard of living, or one you are willing to adjust to, at 45%-50% of your income.

• Most employer sponsored disability plan coverage is not portable.  Therefore, if one were to quit or be terminated, there would be no more coverage of your income.

• Worker's Compensation Insurance is not Disability Insurance at work. Worker's Compensation is required by the state to be provided by your employer.  This type of insurance only covers a disability due to an accident on the job, while you are working. This does not cover a sickness, unless you became sick due to something at work.
